Instead of using the word “self-awareness” to describe what happens to a person in the movie, they used it to describe how a person is aware of what they are, as well as what they are not. I don’t really know why, but I think it was because they used the word “awareness” to describe what a self-aware person is, but a self-aware person is aware of themselves.
In the movie, the Buddhist monks are aware of their own awareness and their own habits. In reality, the monks are just good at following their usual routine and not really aware of what they are doing. But that’s ok because the rest of the movie, and other films like it, is about the awareness of the monks, not what they are doing.
